Happy Birthday West Virginia One hundred forty years ago, the year of eighteen hundred sixy three. President Abraham Lincoln signed a proclamation whereby Virginia would set us free. Free to live as mountaineers in this wonderful state of ours, named West Virginia with its lofty, high mountain towers. Its beauty is unsurpassed with rippling streamsss, lovely valleys and hills. Where the bear, deer, wild turkeys, and other animals roam at will. Water so clear you can see rocks washed clean and fishermen catch bass and trout, the likes you've never seen. Wheeling became our first capital, until it was decided that City was too far north. Then the City of Charleston, More Central, proved its worth. Arthur I. Boreman was our First Governor: Joe Manchin is the present. And in between some good, some bad, a few whose actions we do resent. This mountainous state is one of the most beautiful in the whole U.S.A It's ours, it's free, let's keep it that way. May you, and yours, do your part to keep it pretty and clean. We should be proud to be West Virginians and invite others in. Don't trash the land, and don't talk trash about it. It's West Virginia, Almost Heaven, and we love it! Wanda W. Goff June 20, 2007
